A tragic loss. Birute' rescued many orangutans. She inspired people to suppress the brutal trade in these animals and protect some habitat for them. She and her team studied their behavior and ecology, helping to disperse ignorant attitudes about our fellow apes.

We're lucky to have had Galdikas, Fossey, and Goodall, who cleared our minds of cartoon nonsense. Without their work, we couldn't understand ourselves and the complex, inspiring beauty of our natural world.
