Today Mar 25 is anniv of Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Greenwich Village, now a part of NYU, building is Nat'l Landmark. 146 died bc stairwells were locked, more fire escapes never built. Owners never saw jail, civil suit took $74 per dead employee but owners still profited $64K of insurance.
1911-13, the new Factory Safety Commission created 60 new NY laws to protect workers, improve conditions. 6-day workweek, 52 hours at $5-8.65/ hour adjusted to 2025 $$.
