i guess part of the reason for me to discontinue Melted Moon and start a solo project (which it de-facto has been for a while) is that my performance gameboys have been stolen at #37c3.
if anyone ever spots one of these, let me know.
@mbr It makes me sad to read about stolen stuff at congress. It was so much stuff last year. And it became a thing the years before that. Before it moved back to Hamburg for the first time I wasn't even able to find somebody who had ever heard of anything being stolen at congress ever. I asked around because there was an incident caused by somebody who snuck in to steal laptops. I used to leave my stuff unattended when I went for a stroll or get a drink. I only stopped because I was asked to by angels and I had to pick up my stuff from lost and found twice because somebody brought it there before somebody else might steal it. That's when this feeling of sadness started and reading about this now makes me realise that the congress that I love doesn't even exist anymore. It's not the same after the thought that theft exists enters your mind.
@steeph @mbr My laptop was stolen at the EasterHegg 2007. @timpritlove's laptop was stolen on the Chaos Camp 2003, I seem to remember. Several of my ZIP disks (with important data on them!) were stolen at #15c3, 1998. On the c3s before that, hardware was labelled at the entrance to make it harder to steal it. Even though it feels like you could leave your stuff unattended at Chaos events, it was never really a good idea.

@deBaer That makes sense. Thanks for correcting. It is a nice feeling though.

I did read about it more in the last three months. I guess the bigger it gets the more it will happen. (If "happen" is the right term.) though@[email protected]

@deBaer @steeph @mbr My laptop was not stolen at Camp 2003. You are confusing this, it happened at the (first) re:publica after show party at the old newthinking office.
@timpritlove @steeph @mbr Sorry, then I remembered wrong.
@steeph i don't go to chaos events anymore, i think 38c3 was the last one. partly because of the theft problem, mostly because of other problems related to harmful social dynamics, it's simply not a community i feel safe in anymore. i agree that it used to be different.
@mbr I haven't been at a large one since 36c3 for other reasons. But the community is huge and diverse. I'm sure there are smaller similar events that you'd like. Not that I'm trying to convince you. I'm just happy that I've started to check lesser known ones out.

@steeph @mbr a hammock of mine was stolen at the second c3 in leipzig, exept for 30-40 people events where you know everyone its not save to leave stuff alone.

most of the stuff you see "left alone" only works because people know people who are sitting just a few seats away at the same assembly or they have close connections with the assemblies around and everyone keeps an eye out for each others stuff.

but if you are alone or do not have that i would not risk it.
