From the NYT Morning newsletter today re: the plane-fire truck collision at La Guardia:
“the two controllers on duty at the time of the crash were doing the jobs of four people, officials said. Such a practice is common during night shifts, but federal regulators have raised safety concerns about it before.”

I have never understood this thinking that people will magically be able to do their colleagues’ jobs along with their own if there are layoffs or other reductions. So frustrating!
