God, I hate #AppleMusic recommendations algorithm. I like certain genres of #music and listen to them a lot, I fave songs, I actively search for artists performing that genre. But no matter, Apple Music would never surface that genre for me. It would recommend some generic “Dance” rather than what I actually listen to. It takes a lot of listening to make it recommend even remotely related music but it decays in a few days of me stepping away. Its curated playlists also suck. Like, this genre is not exactly obscure. It is pasts its heyday but there's a lot of older music in this genre and new music is being made at a decent pace. But there's no playlist for it. There’s “Música Catalana”, “First Nations Australia”, “Halk”, “Hörspiele”, and other regional/national variations but very few actual genre playlists. Songs also disappear from Apple Music. Quite a few songs I added to my library are not available any more. What is the point of this? This fucking sucks! We were promised access to all the music and discovery, instead we’ve got this.

I can't believe that in 2026 I’m seriously considering digging up my iPod Classic and maintaining an #mp3 collection. 😔

@pointlessone I have sort of the opposite experience with the recommendations. Vastly improved over Spotify which would pigeon hole me.

That said, absolutely feel you on the missing tracks thing. Definitely considering a collection again to avoid that.

One other thing worth mentioning, you can upload tracks to Apple Music and they’re largely indistinguishable from ones provided by the service. Nice to fill in some gaps.

@jqr a while ago I signed up for Spotify to compare algos. They shadowbanned me in 2 days. Now I can’t log in: they say no such account. But also can’t sign up with the same email, they say account already exists. I can use a different email but I feel like this is indicative of the future relationship so don’t bother.
