Another tidbit about GBA, it had an 8-bit DAC with no hardware mixing and a really awful analog output stage. But almost every title other than the Golden Sun games seems to have used Nintendo's official audio driver, which did 8-bit software mixing, so it was much noisier than it needed to be when mixing multiple voices.
@pervognsen I did do some DSP experiments on the GBA and made a sample player that could run at different sample rates and with different sample interpolation types and a 16bit mix buffer. At 42048Hz or more it sounded pretty decent on the Analogue Pocket, which has a cleaner audio output than the regular GBA, but the 8bit output still adds a good amount of unavoidable quantization noise.
