@timberwraith @emma What I don't get about this announcement is that last I checked (which was admittedly awhile ago, but I haven't heard that it changed), surgical transition was grounds for immediate excommunication, and it was singled out in a list of especially egregious sins. And baptism was restricted for those who had gender surgeries. So this announcement is weird to have it be an announcement.

(But I haven't looked any further into it. I used to dig deep and write blog posts about these things.)

@timberwraith @emma They are VERY weird about that stuff. Gender essentialism is baked in deep. But it's odd they have to work so hard to enforce something that is supposedly such an eternal aspect of your soul.

@corbden @timberwraith @emma I remember reading a blog post from a trans woman awhile back who had gotten her patriarchal blessing pre-transition which said she would have a lot of spirit children in the celestial kingdom and post-GRS was allowed to marry her husband in the temple. This was awhile ago, so she could have left the church since then. I haven't been able to find the post, so it could have been taken down. I think about her a lot.

@reference_material Wow! That's really interesting. I wonder if the Patriarch knew she was trans when he gave that blessing, and if they just let her go through to avoid the embarrassment and exposure of an impossible prophecy. 1980, as well, long before the culture war, and at a time when they could do all that on the DL. The intersex angle might also have been a factor? Unless that was discovered after – the timeline isn't too clear.
