As part of trying to fix a few things on my laptop (particularly WiFi), I swapped the Linux installation from regular Linux Mint to Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). So far, it seems to be working pretty much the same as regular Mint, but without Ubuntu as a middleman.
