When the Japanese live translation goes silent because the translators are too stunned to repeat your Pearl Harbor “joke” to the Japanese PM, you’ve officially reached a new level of diplomatic failure.

Those seconds of silence were the most honest reaction of the day.

@Strandjunker

Can't wait to hear his joke when he visits Germany

@mtnrbq65

Well he already joked last year that D-day was "not a pleasant day" for the German chancellor, but I'm sure he'll come up with some new jokes this year.

To his credit the German chancellor Merz gave a great reply "Well in the long run, Mr President, this was the liberation of my country from Nazi dictatorship" but sadly Merz himself is collaborating with the German neonazi party

@adamsaidsomething @mtnrbq65 why do you say our chancellor is collaborating with the AfD? I don’t see that in any of the last elections on federal and state level.

@Socltime @mtnrbq65

I mean

https://www.dw.com/en/afd-firewall-germany-political-consensus-explained/a-71457050

"The conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) breached what has become known as the "AfD firewall" on Wednesday when party leader Friedrich Merz put forward a motion for strict immigration laws, which passed with the support of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) [and he was accused] of ending a decadeslong consensus in Germany "that there would be no cooperation between democratic parties and the extreme right"

Germany: What is the 'AfD firewall'?

Germany's conservatives were able to pass a strict immigration motion with votes by the far-right party, marking a historic breach of the "firewall" on working with the far-right on policy. Has the "firewall" fallen?

@adamsaidsomething @mtnrbq65 I see, thank you for explaining. In my view the state BW election 2 weeks ago (that seems to go into a Green/CDU coalition) and the state RP election tomorrow (that seems to be a form of CDU/SPD coalition) they appear not to coopeerate in any way with AfD.

@Socltime

Appearances can be different to reality. I don't know about the local level but in the European parliament, members of C.D.U. and C.S.U. were caught collaborating with A.F.D. and the extreme right parties from Marine Le Pen and Giorgia Meloni using a secret WhatsApp group to coordinate and push thru laws that will deport refugees to so-called "return hubs" outside of the E.U. and who knows what else they agreed on
