In August 1672, an enraged Dutch mob lynched, mutilated, and partially consumed their unpopular leader, Johan de Witt, and his brother Cornelis in The Hague.

Fueled by propaganda blaming him for military failures, the crowd cooked parts of the bodies and ate them, selling others as souvenirs in a violent act of political hatred.
