Apháneia
A #poetry thread

i.

Great temple, Doric stone
that sprawls across the green.
Within, upon a throne,
one waits, a shaded queen.

Greek goddess in a niche
of stone with arch above —
her alabaster cheek,
wax tear, unanswered love.

Her name, Apháneia,
wan goddess of the wise,
the patroness of those
whom we hide in plain sight.

ii.

She waits in her great house
for worshippers to come,
vast stone roof, light is doused:
she’s only touched by the sun

when shadows steal the day.
Last light is all she sees:
she briefly shines, fades away,
snuffed by the darkness’ breeze.

Brief moments she is seen
with her perfection bare,
draws back into her dream
where eyes return her stare.

The word ἀφάνεια (apháneia) means “to be hidden, to go unnoticed, to fade from perception”.
