We know that the present administration is dumber than a pile of rocks. But this ban on foreign made consumer "routers" takes a special cake of its own.
This policy fails to understand that a "router" is a prettied-up computer, often using standard PC X86-64 or ARM architecture, with some wifi and ethernet interfaces. Like all computers, it is an empty box until software is added. And like all computers it can be programmed to do may things, only one of which is being a router.
This policy focuses on computers pre-loaded with routing software. But the policy fails to define the threats it is protecting against or a criteria for "safe operation".
Nor does this policy comprehend that many devices act as routers but are not sold as such.
Moreover, many hidden devices - often run by very small processors, such as ESP32s, exist in things like Amazon Echo and other IOT boxes. Those devices often chat with the outside world and could become security threats.
