Periodic reminder: There is one thing you should do when a Microsoft or Google wants to discuss open standards: leave. Really, it’s not worth the time.🤷‍♀️
They only ever do such if pressured by a more powerful entity.
@helge what I leaned from my time in standards is that participants are there only to the extent of their perceived self-benefit. Few are invested in the cause of open standards.
@atlauren I'm not entirely sure I understand the sentence, because the cause of open standards directly leads to the benefit. Once you are big enough, you make your own standards, but for companies below the threshold (many/most), the openness is a big benefit. And of course they do it because of that 🙂 I wrote a CalDAV plugin because there have been a lot of CalDAV servers, so that for sure was perceived self-benefit, but not in a bad way.
