Hi Zack, that is quite something.  

On an unrelated aside, I'm wondering about the dark spots that are visible over oceanic areas (in the North Atlantic for instance). They don't look very physical. Do you think it's something to do with data processing?

@gueuledatmosphere Yep, this is a statistical interpolation issue that appears in this particular dataset, especially around island locations (land vs. sea observational gradients).
