okay, so in July 2024 I bought a pair of 18tb hard drives for storage + backup for $180 apiece.

This January, I bought a third 18TB to add parity checking, which was $320.
Now (in March), looking at the same drives, it’s $500.

@erl I checked out the prices of portable SSDs yesterday.

The largest ones are up to four-digit prices.

(8TB Samsung T5 Evo MSRP is $1200)

@erl yeah, built my main server with 6x20TB HDD, 2x2TB SSD, and 128GB DDR5 in late 2023 / early 2024…
I bet I could liquidate my mortgage if I put that one on eBay right now!
@ju Oh damn, yeah I keep an eye out for cheap components on craigslist around me and at least once a week there’s someone selling a whole home server for a price that seems silly high until you piece together the cost of each of the components…
@erl I had been saving up since 2024 to expand my NAS and thought I’d finally be able to afford the drives by 2026 🥲
@mj12albert yeah when I’d initially built my little NAS I bought three drives then returned one since it seemed like too much too early, especially since **obviously** storage always gets cheaper with time

@erl

Billionaire subversion. This isnt "inflation" this s a billionaire buying all the hard drives to create a shortage, like a Billionaire did to ram.

Let's end billionairism.

We need a New Deal
The deck is stacked.

General Strike. World wide.
No more billionaires.
