Don’t assume every square inch of Vietnam is triple canopy jungle so thick that you can’t see past 20m in. Designated marksmen were recognized as useful, by both Northern and Southern forces.

Also the M84 scope fitted in the photo was only 2.5x magnification. It was really low and more suited to a marksman role than a dedicated sniper role. Hathcock for example most commonly used an 8x scope, in comparison.
