Sorry, but you defaulted me to a monthly donation, and you don't let me change that, so now I have to discontinue all my donations to chuffed Gaza accounts.

The default default option amounts to fraud.

Yes, I should have paid more attention, but I will now report you to my bank.

I am sorry for all my Gaza friends that you force me to abandon them.

@lipservant @Silvia_Project Hi, can you please tell us (Gaza Verified) more about what happened here? It sounds quite concerning.

CC @fabio

@aral @Silvia_Project I think I know what happened.

Both Chuffed and GoFundMe campaign managers have an option to select both the default amount and the default cadence (one-shot or monthly) of their campaign donation forms.

Most of the campaigns default to one-shot, but there are a few campaigns where the default is “monthly”. Then it’s up to the user to switch it before they hit “Pay”.

@lipservant it’s possible to cancel regular donations to Chuffed campigns - whether you already created an account on the platform or not. Instructions are here.

If you didn’t donate through a registered account, just make sure to use the same email address as the one you used for your donation when you create one, so the scheduled donation can be correctly linked to you.

In general I agree that campaign managers should be honest and make their campaigns’ schedule default to “one-shot” - there are so many campaigns in this initiative that if they were all to default to “monthly” a lot of donors may get into financial trouble.

And perhaps we as #GazaVerified should also provide guidelines to campaign managers around this aspect to avoid alienating donors.

But I don’t see it as something as extreme to report the campaign to the bank - a lot of campaigns play this trick on Chuffed and GFM, we agree that it’s not a transparent practice, but it’s not something illegal either.

How Do I Cancel A Regular Donation

To cancel a regular donation manually, you will need to : Login to your account. If you don't already have a Chuffed.org account, head here , enter y...

We are ready to provide help to solve this problem, and we respect the instructions and rules set by the managers (Verified Gaza).
We confirm that we took this step because some supporters asked us to allow monthly donations.
So, there is no problem, and there is no fraud in this matter.
We ask for your understanding
@Silvia_Project @fabio @lipservant Just a clarification: Gaza Verified is just a team of four volunteers and not even an organisation as such. We do not manage anything apart from the interviews and the web site. From what we’ve been told (and seen in the videos they share of their work), The Silvia Project is a group in Palestine working to help other Palestinians. But it is independent of Gaza Verified. Apart from an emergency appeal we carried out during the height of the bombing to help families move out of harm’s way, we have not and do not plan on collecting any money ourselves. We simply link to the fundraisers of the people we’ve verified.

@Silvia_Project @lipservant @aral of course, you’re not the first campaign either that does this, there’s absolutely no fraud in what you did.

And I perfectly understand that some donors would prefer to donate monthly.

Would it be possible for you to make “one-shot” the default schedule, while keeping monthly as an option?

My guess is that, with nearly 200 campaigns on gaza-verified, most of the donors want to donate one-shot to campaigns as they feel appropriate rather than committing to a monthly schedule.

Those who want to donate monthly will of course always have the option to opt-in, but at least we make sure that most of the other donors don’t feel like they’re being tricked into subscriptions. And I know that myself because a couple of times I didn’t pay attention to the schedule option either and ended up being automatically charged by several campaigns the next month.
