I wonder whether they have a mechanism of enforcing the “per day” part of that limitation.
What is stopping someone from driving to one petrol station, filling up 50L, and then driving to a different petrol station to fill up another 50L?

Don’t know about Slovenian law, but here it wouldn’t be illegal as long as you do it on the gas station’s property and not on public territory :D (well not illegal regarding the plate swapping, filling >50ltr per person is still illegal)

Obviously it’ll still look sketchy as shit, you’ll look like you’re about to pump and run, so that was not a serious tip anyways. Would probably look less sketchy to just cover a letter and might be enough to trick an ANPR-based validation system already.

The only surveillance system they might have for this is a police car randomly seeing you fueling up in two places during the same time. There won’t be any automatic number plate scanning or anything. Just regular human people using their eyes.

Police cars can pull data on licence plates in seconds, punishments are harsh, and they can also just ask for the registration at payment.

But such a system is not yet in place right? They would have to set up something ad-hoc to keep track of licence plates and how much they fueled up at each petrol station around the country, which seems like something you cannot realistically pull off on the short term.

From my experience there’s nothing stopping you, but you could probably get in trouble if someone reported you.

I’ve read the 50L limit is per gas station per day. I don’t know how they limit this in practice. Regarding fuel tourism the govt has raised prices on the highway and banned transporting fuel to other countries.

If it is per gas station they could hypothetically require gas stations to individually keep track of licence plates in their own bookkeeping.
See the same licence plate twice in a day? They don’t get to fuel up.

This is the way to go. Demand reduction is the only sensible response. Unfortunately many govs are cutting taxes. As if the price signal didn’t actually reflect a REAL HUGE PROBLEM with fossil fuels.
