It is, I suspect, always foolish to imagine one really "knows" another, however seemingly close, or that one can change that other.
All spouses or partners are strangers, in some degree.

I have heard it said that English, at least, has too few words to encompass the different forms of what it lumps together under the term "love".
I suspect, perhaps for that reason, most of us have a very inadequate philosophical understanding of the concept, and maybe a consequent tendency to self deception.
I hope your sister finds whatever liberation she needs.
I think I'll stick with a mug of coffee and a biscuit as the best approach...!
