How do you trust a new Linux Distribution?

Who do you trust (… and how do you trust the new Linux Distribution StageX?) Do you trust your best friend from childhood? Do you trust your chosen Distribution for your Homelab? For your Workplace?

How do you trust a new Linux Distribution?

Who do you trust (… and how do you trust the new Linux Distribution StageX?) Do you trust your best friend from childhood? Do you trust your chosen Distribution for your Homelab? For your Workplace? Psychology says there are roughly two types of trust. Direct and Transitive trust. Direct trust is you trusting your best friend. Transitive trust is your best friend assuring you another person is also trustworthy and you listening to their word because you trust them.

@kubikpixel I don't trust any OS or system.
I always expect software to fail at the most inconvenient time possible and/or to spy on me.
All ports I personally do not need are blocked; behavior of application is inspected on first launch and every now and then. Our printer, TV, and NAS are in an isolated vlan with no internet access...
It's tedious and annoying, but this is what our shadowrun-esk-IT world has become.
One more reason I spent more time in my work-shed.
@waldschnecke @kubikpixel I am a bit puzzled: What do you guys mean when you say trust?

@droidboy @kubikpixel Very good question actually...

For me, trust in software of any kind; not only an OS; is beyond beyond privacy & security, but also reliability.
And this trust is non-existent because at least (usually all) of those apply to a degree.

%insert long rant about how annoying all this has become%

@waldschnecke @kubikpixel I have the feeling we are mixing up layers. There is the technical layer, where computer programs "trust" other computer programs and so they allow to do things. and than there is the personal trust layer, which is a set of feelings of persons. And somehow we use one word for both of it and everything in between. I wondering if that is a good idea.
