bluesky is a capitalist endeavour funded by cryptobros, while mastodon is not. bluesky has a financial incentive to do quiet seedy things behind the scenes with your data mastodon does not. any secrecy like elena cites is a warning you should heed

I keep on thinking about all these schemes for social media age verification, and how they allow social media companies to collect even more user data.

I am really happy that the Fediverse isn't structured for that.

unfortunately there are laws coming down the pike which some servers may be forced to comply with or be targeted

but yes, nicely, you can just port your account to another server in another jurisdiction

I feel I ought to research what the legal definition of "social media" is, in various jurisdictions. Do various types of Fediverse applications apply, or not?

For instance, I am maintaining a WordPress blog with the ActivityPub plugin. Does this already count as "social media"?

yeah and truth be told if you run something tiny you may just fly under the radar for years or forever

but larger instances can't ignore it

i think it depends on germany, since that's mastodon.social's stomping grounds

i don't know what the legal posture is in germany with getting or not getting age verification laws. but i did see this recently and i let out the loudest groan in months:

We've had plenty of Christian Conservative chancellors before. They often implemented bad policies, but at least they seemed to be interested in promoting prosperity for Germany as a whole (if not exactly for _all_ German citizens).

But Merz is basically a reject from the old "Captain Planet" cartoon. He is a corporate raider by nature, and his loyalties lie with American oligarchs and culture warriors, not with the people who actually live in Germany.
