Age declaration and verification in Linux gathers pace, Google blesses us with some hoops to jump through to install the software we want on stock Android, the FSFE lost their payment provider, great new KDE Plasma and GNOME features, and more.

@latenightlinux Thankfully the world has #BSD to avoid all the Pottering vibe/age mess. I suppose you have non-systemd distros but gee, I'd hate to be in the Linux camp right about now.
@Tubsta @latenightlinux don't think it won't come for you eventually.
@joeress @latenightlinux OpenBSD, Canadian, have been very clear that it isn’t an issue they need to deal with or are concerned about.

What happened to an Operating System just being an Operating System? Too much scope creep and I can see Linux falling into the Windows trap (doing too much out of scope of its original objective). You must have had to edit out a lot of @felimwhiteley going off 🤣
@latenightlinux about google's 24h delay, my guess is that it's so that your nerd buddy can't install newpipe for you when you meet them at the pub

Re: Episode 378

You have to comply with the laws of other countries (or states) if you provide services (or in this case, operating systems) to citizens there.

Makes sense right, otherwise companies outside the EU could just ignore EU laws like the GDPR *completely*. The EU will leave Meta alone if they stop providing their services to EU citizens.

IANAL, but what seems to be the solution is:
Don't offer your operating system in problematic jurisdictions. Make the downloads for your Linux distro geo-blocked for residents in California.

@latenightlinux It will be Crap if we expect Websites to cater to every damage jurisdiction. But you idiots started this with that damn cookie banner. As for Age Verification, this should really only apply to OSs that create cloud accounts. Local Accounts should be exempted. So this gets Microsoft, Apple, Google and Various Commercial Linux Providers that require licensing and online Accounts.
