And when the only virtues by which my worth was measured were the manly ones (strength, intelligence, competitiveness, courage/foolhardiness, etc.), all I had at my disposal was intelligence. So I had to be smarter than everybody else, and I was _so_ insufferable.
I've been lucky to have a few friends over the years astute enough to realise that showing off was my love language.
