Putting this into context: The Valero Port Arthur refinery is one of the country's most significant energy assets with a reported capacity of nearly 400,000 bpd processing heavy, sour crude oils into high-value products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
@newsguyusa Still owned by Saudi Aramco?
@newsguyusa My bad; the Saudis own a different facility, same place.

@newsguyusa anything more about this explosion?

Can’t find anything beyond initial reports

@newsguyusa
Heavy sour crude, like practically all the oil that comes out of Venezuela?
What a coinkydink!
@newsguyusa If there were any Iran sympathisers in the USA, that would be a probable target for an accidental fire.
@IncHulk @newsguyusa yeah they are usually called MOSAD agents..
@newsguyusa Wars have no theaters. A handful of well armed Iranian operatives in the US could do a huge amount of damage to US refining and oil distribution systems. This could just be the oil business being dangerous as usual or it could be a "we too have weapons" demonstration to make Trump back off.

@Infoseepage @newsguyusa Refinery explosions are unfortunately common; the Chevron refinery in the northeast SF Bay Area has had several. Lots of very flammable stuff tends to do that. While an attack is possible, it would be wise to wait for details before assuming anything.

Chevron Richmond Refinery - Wikipedia

@not2b @[email protected] @newsguyusa gotta show that to all the EV doomers

@not2b @Infoseepage @newsguyusa The real problem is often not flammability but corrosiveness. Crude often comes with a dose of salt water dispersed in it, depending on how much care is applied in pre-processing. Obviously not an issue here, but REB (russian export) is known to eat refinery components faster due to its salt (chloride) content.

To state the obvious, maintenance is a must.

@Methylzero @Infoseepage @newsguyusa I think it is a combination: corrosion causes leaks, which can then catch fire.

@not2b @Infoseepage @newsguyusa

One day I was riding a bus across the Bay Bridge, glanced up, saw a HUGE WALL OF BLACK SMOKE stretching across half of the horizon, and followed it with my eyes to the source-- a seething pillar of flame over the Chevron refinery, easily 100' high.

Nobody else on the bus seemed to notice or think anything was out of the ordinary.

From Treasure Island that night, I could distantly hear Richmond's air raid sirens warning everyone to stay inside.

The rates of respiratory illness around these refineries is very alarming.

If anything good is to come out of this whole nightmare, hopefully people will start taking divestment more seriously. We have GOT to end our dependence on this filthy stuff.

@newsguyusa Well thank goodness it wasn't a wind farm or solar panel array. We'd all be dead!
What are the chances of sabotage being involved?

@newsguyusa

Remember that time a solar panel exploded?

Me neither.

@newsguyusa Is that near where this proposed oil operation is to be built in Texas?
@newsguyusa what's this now ??😳😱🀯 Another 9/11 ??😁😁😁😁😁
