Crossposted from https://lemmy.ca/post/62238088 [https://lemmy.ca/post/62238088] Air Traffic Control gave clearance to the fire truck to cross the runway while the Air Canada plane was landing. After realizing their mistake ATC tried to stop the truck but it was too late. Both pilots died and 41 people were transported to local hospitals including passengers, crew, and fire fighters.

So many things went wrong. The ATC will be the administration’s scapegoat, but the issue is chronic underfunding and overworking of the staff. This controller was dealing with all this at 3am, by themselves managing both ground and air frequencies at a massive international airport…

ATCs need to go on strike again or something. Let’s see ICE bums try to manage airport traffic.

You would think for a job where simple mistakes like this costs lives, they would want ATCs to be properly rested and alert
