Impeached but not convicted
. That process failed to get the requisite number of votes in the Senate. Therefore no sanction-phase was reached.
When "the man on the street" says "impeached", they're usually intending more than just
the House's portion of the process. Simple impeachment (the academic meaning) means, essentially, fuck-all absent the Senate's trial process ending in a conviction.
There's not been a successful full impeachment-conviction during the lifetimes of the current electorate. I suspect that even if there were, most people outside of government and academic circles still would not understand the difference.
