If you don't have a backup configured on #Holos, losing your device or reinstalling the app means losing your followers and control over your posts.

I'm working on an automatic encrypted recovery system. Your private key, followers, following, and posts will be backed up to the relay, encrypted with a passphrase only you know. The server never sees any of it. On a new device or a fresh install, just enter your passphrase and everything is restored.

@HolosSocial Forgot Mastodon Social isn't communicating with my main instance...

Anyways, what I commented there (1/3):

was testing Hollos earlier and it got me thinking, since the instance is just the relay, would it be possible to import information of one account to another, even if it's on a different relay?

@HolosSocial (2/3)

Also didn't check that much into it, but if this function isn't there but gets added and there's something like custom lists of saved posts, perhaps posts from the previous account could be imported as saved ones in the new instance?

@HolosSocial (3/3)

Also what would happen if an imported post is from a dead instance? Would it simply not be imported, or if cross-relay is/becomes available, would it be preserved in the local database as an "unreachable content" in case the person imports the content into an instance with the post available?

@Auster1
Custom domains solve all of this. Your identity is tied to your own domain, not to a specific relay. If you switch relays, you just update your DNS. Your actor URI stays the same, so your followers, your posts, and all interactions remain valid. No migration needed, no dead links.
