What led you to choose your current Mastodon instance?

I thought, correctly, as it turned out, that I might need to get off twitter and it'd be good to have something else available. At the time, mas.to was allowing open signup. That was the whole reason.
P.s.: It's really well-run so I've never wanted to change. Including closing signup when people at other instances complained about open signups opening the way for spam and harassment.
