Yes the U.S. has a terrible president but the very role of president guarantees eventual terribleness. When you create a powerful position, it's just a matter of time before the worst kind of person attains it, and by then all your precious checks and balances have eroded as well
Stop creating powerful positions. We literally don't need them and it always goes badly

@AnarchoNeighbor That was the original intent of the position of president: It was supposed to *not* be powerful. The president isn't guaranteed a majority as in a parliamentary system, so they can't pass any law without the consent of congress. They are expressly forbidden from allocating any funding. They can't declare war without congress. The position of president was supposed to be that of an administrative official, not a policy-maker.

But over the decades the position just grew and grew.

@AnarchoNeighbor A large part of that is that the president appoints people to so many, many different positions - many of which didn't exist when the constitution was written. The Senate merely confirms. So while the president's personal authority is limited, they are entirely welcome to head pretty much every federal agency with loyal sycophants who will obey any instruction without regard to if it is actually within presidential authority or not.
