@croyle Very cool! You said earlier that those specks were caused by hammering. Could it also be caused by impurities in the steel?

Those spots are definitely hammer marks and not impurities in the steel. I've actually never seen steel that was so impure that you could see chunks of discoloration in it, even when people started with raw iron ore that they smelted themselves.

The knife is reasonably sharp but not as sharp as I often make knife blades. Sometimes you want a butter knife sharp, other times an edge that will cleanly slice a sheet of paper, and I think this one was between those.
