Dave Slusher - Tech StuffMar 22

How much #beekeeping and #beekeeper Mastodon is there? As a first year newbie, I imagine there is a point where I will get enough discussion about how one can organize a Langstroth hive. It will take a lot to get there, though.

Got my stuff over the weekend, 2 nucs of bees in ~second week of April or whenever they choose to be ready. This week I'm buying cinder blocks, white silage tarp at the rec of my mentor (because the ground in my yard is very friendly to small hive beetles.)

I had to get over my analysis paralysis. There are so many ways to set up a hive so I just had to pick one.

@tommyhp Thanks! I had a job with lots of travel and Copenhagen was my favorite of all the places I went. When is the productive part of your year? I'd expect you have a similar climate and beekeeping year to the upper center of the USA. I learned in my course that most of the commercial honey in the US, like over 80% comes from the Dakotas.

Copenhagen is nice, they have an inner city beekeeping project going on there. Our bees have been active for a couple of weeks now, but the season really kicks off when the dandelions bloom in April and lasts until September when we feed them for the winter. I suppose you're influenced by inland climate with colder winters and warmer summers than we usually experience. Climate here is costal for the most parts.

@tommyhp I am in the coastal southern US so our winters are comparatively mild. The heat of the summers works against honey production which is why we get less than the more northern hives.
