In the early hours of Sunday, March 1, 2026, armed assailants launched a coordinated attack on Awarpiny, the administrative headquarters of Awarpiny County in South Sudan’s Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA). The assault, which lasted from approximately 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., left at least 169 people dead—who were subsequently buried in mass graves—along with 68 wounded and 15 missing, according to local leaders.
