Samsung 'smart' fridge lets users disable ads, but by doing so, they disable the widget that also shows news, the weather and a calendar. #darkpattern

"Wanting to keep the widget but not the ads, the 49-year-old in Edgewater, Md., made sure his home router’s ad-blocking software extended to his fridge. He hasn’t seen another since."

@rickf I’m really trying not to be that loser computer guy who goes “hurr hurr your fault for buying a so-called ‘smart’ device” but I honestly cannot think of a reason I would want my refrigerator to tell me the news, and the other two functions can be replicated by an actual calendar and a window.

Maybe appliances should just make my food cold and STFU please.

@antiquedigital Same. And as a functioning adult, if I need my fridge to remind me that the milk is low or eggs are going bad, I think I have bigger problems to worry about.
