Slovenia election sees ruling party tied with opposition

Prime Minister Robert Golob's governing liberal Freedom Movement of Slovenia was almost perfectly tied with Janez Jansa and his right-wing SDS party, with 99% of votes counted.

@j2bryson ....didn't it? What?
@j2bryson Preliminary counts seem to be very close to the final results?

@pettter @j2bryson

I divide parties as pro-EU or pro-russia because I am interested in foreign policy trends in EU member countries

Of course national governments are formed around party coalitions on the left-right spectrum (which is mainly determined by internal policy)

You can see here how I wrote that the formation of a stable government will be difficult:

Anyhow, whatever the government, the election shows how Slovenia will continue to support the EU and Ukraine

@elCelio Why do you put Levica down as 'pro-Russia'? I can't find anything about them holding such positions, but I don't speak Slovenian. @j2bryson

@pettter @j2bryson

because they support ending military aid to Ukraine.
but since they are in a coalition with the Freedom Movement they can't block it.

@elCelio To be clear, Miha Kordiš, who is the person behind the proposal, is no longer a member or a candidate for Levica, and was not at the time of that article. Was he a member when he submitted it? @j2bryson

@pettter @j2bryson

yes you are right. this is after he was expelled. it was an attempt to create a crisis in the coalition supporting the government, because Levica didn't support military aid to Ukraine but the government did.

For example (this in Slovenian, I had to use automatic translation):
https://www.rtvslo.si/slovenija/poslanska-skupina-levice-pozvala-vlado-naj-ustavi-vojasko-pomoc-ukrajini/723075

RTV Slovenija
@elCelio @pettter sorry both — I’m bad with names and saw DW panicking about the “farr right” party and assumed the final 30% of the vote had all been on the right somehow — there’s often systemic differences in who gets counted earlier or later eg municipality size.

@j2bryson @pettter

the main problem of the far right populist party is that they got above the threshold: as a consequence neither the right-wing coalition nor the left-wing coalition has a majority in parliament...
