The Purpose of Protocols

Every open social protocol generates shared resources, but none has produced a governance framework adequate to those resources. So who fills that vacuum?

"Exclusion, in other words, is the fediverse’s core governance mechanism, which is close to the inverse of what the phrase “open protocol” usually implies."

Insightful and informative as ever, I'm so glad you're sitting and thinking about this stuff, and then writing it down. Thank you for this.

@fediversereport This was a really good read! Thinking about how things have gone so far and how the lack of definition doesn't lead to some kind of neutrality, but lead to a lot of the struggles we have today. And addressing not just the more recently founded protocols but also the ones that we don't even think about but use day to day.

I'm also curious, do you have any thoughts on polyproto if you have looked into it? There are a lot of discussions in its development about filling in some of the gaps other protocols have had, in things like onboarding and trying to avoid too much fragmentation in extensions.
