I’m convinced the AI bubble will be similar to the internet bubble. AI will be a deeply transformative technology that “changes everything” but a bunch of top AI companies today won’t be relevant in a decade or so.

Similar to how Amazon’s still a top player but Sun Microsystems, AOL, & Yahoo are either dead or irrelevant today.

@carnage4life I had been thinking a lot about this. Amazon as a huge player survived because they marketed AWS well enough that the web store never really needed to be profitable.
One of these AI giants is going to have to find a pivot like that if they’ve got a chance of surviving since everybody is basically doing the same thing.
@carnage4life 50 years in IT says you are correct (I've seen half a dozen "transformative" technologies)..and the transformations are likely not what pundits are predicting.
@carnage4life Surely that’s a big part of the thinking behind investing in data centers: maybe LLMs plateau somewhat short of changing the world, but then people find other uses for the infrastructure. It’s an opening to become a/the new AWS.
@carnage4life Open source AI models only lagging 9+ mo, and on device AI for simpler use cases, will change the dynamics. This revolution has potential to be much more decentralized and distributed, for large parts of use cases, once things settle a little (after a financial crash)
