A Worthy Alternative to Discord!? [Matrix] (Techsplainations) - Pawb.Social

Wish you could take charge ofā€Ž your digital communications? There’s a good alternative, and the grass is greener on the other side…

Matrix has a lot of problems, some of them inherent to its design, including leaking metadata of encrypted messages to any server that participates in a chat room (this metadata includes the time the message was sent, size, sender and recipients of messages).

I personally think Movim is the better option that’s actively federated, while Fluxer is also promising if it successfully implements federation as well.

yes there is problems for sure, that metadata issue is one i shoulda touched on in the video. i do think things can improve though, and im a very optimistic person :P

im not sure xmpp is as ready for people coming from discord to move to it, but i also recognise that as much of a pain as its been in my experience, equally as much as with matrix, things can improve!

Movim in particular is the most suited for a discord replacement in the XMPP space, as the dev implemented discord-like channels with rooms. It also has group video calls and screensharing with audio (must use a chromium browser for now to share the audio).

It is still clunky compared to Discord, but that generally applies to most of the alternatives šŸ˜…

i also felt like movim would be themost fitting/ feature complete and easy (just create an account and go), but for some reason i just cannot get calls to work. i’m probably doing something wrong, but considering that i’m a serial chat app tester, i expected to be able to troubleshoot it… eventually, i managed to take the movie.eu account and call via dino and monal, but that’s not as feature complete as movim. do you have any recommendations for using movim for calls?
It took me a bit to figure out how to make a call (definitely bad UX). What got it working for me was adding the other user as a contact (beyond just messaging them, it’s like a different thing), and then making sure they also added me as contact, and each person accepted that contact request, then the call button seemed to show up, and the call worked fine, even video.
I’ll be honest I made a matric account just in case Signal gets compromised, haven’t convinced anyone else to try it so I haven’t used it at all.
totally fair! the biggest difficulty with something like this is getting people to actually use it :P
I only use it to track VERY FOSS projects like whisperfish. Which means I open it like once an month

A Matrix client where you can enjoy the conversation using (not) simple, elegant and secure interface protected by e2ee with the power of open source. And colorful cosmetics. Because yes.

I’m self hosting sharkord.com for me and my buddies and its been working perfectly
Is it available on F-droid?/
They do not have a mobile app yet, I have an iPhone so I am just able to add my ā€˜website’ im hosting for it to homescreen and it works okay
How is ā€œA worthy alternative to Discord?ā€ not a drinking game already?
i just want teamdpeak to have a better chat system. not that i think discord chat system was great. i would prefer one more forum in shape. hate having to search a living timeline for a discussion topic
Zulip maybe?

I’m part of a community that has used matrix for several years - with much low intensity-pain can’t decrypt etc

We tried to replace signal with it, but it was never easy enough or good enough for that.

Now we’re moving to delta.chat because that just works - and it feels sooo nice. Huge recommendation.
