School meal programmes in the EU now reach 25 million children, backed by more than €12 billion in public investment and strengthened by the 2021 European Child Guarantee. More than a third of EU countries have expanded or introduced universal free meals in the last five years. The programmes improve nutrition, school participation and long-term health, with studies suggesting returns of up to €34 for every €1 invested.
