#ThenAndNow: Pictured here in this 1915 image from the #NYTMCollection, is the corner of Ditmas Avenue and Gravesend Avenue in #Brooklyn. Gravesend Avenue is now known as McDonald Avenue. It was renamed in 1933 for John R. McDonald (1871-1932), chief clerk at the Brooklyn Surrogate’s Court.
This major artery, which runs along the border between the Kensington and Borough Park neighborhoods, is now covered by the BMT Culver Line’s elevated structure. Prior to its construction, the South Brooklyn Railway (a BMT subsidiary) ran a rail route at street level. Here is the area today:
This route traveled along Gravesend Ave and terminated in Coney Island. Both the street-level route and the BMT Culver Line ran concurrently for a time, but, though some of the South Brooklyn Railway’s tracks still exist, this section under the Culver Line has been paved over.
The photograph is incorrectly labeled “Ditmar Avenue,” perhaps a mix-up with Ditmars Boulevard in Queens. The same building on the right still stands, and is still home to a corner cafe.
