In all my time using film I never heard other photographers refer to their film as "camera rolls" or organize their photos by "camera roll" so is is that weird terminology being used for digital photos ?

Well film comes in rolls but to most of us it was about the photos so they would be organized by content or event. The essentially ceased being a "camera roll" after we took them out of the camera and sent them for developing or did it ourselves. Using that terminology to emulate how film photographers organized their photos seems daft to me.
But then I still call "folders" directories as a tribute to CP/M.
@the5thColumnist It never made sense to me either. It was like someone with no experience looked up terms associated with taking pictures and picked one.
And they are directories. You are 100% right on that.
