Mstdn.ca has cancelled their state of the instance.

It was supposed to happen Sunday.

An email had been sent Saturday morning as a reminder so it looks like circumstances have changed between the reminder and the cancellation late tonight

A future date will be shared eventually

@jerome Ooof. Does not look good.

@michaelgemar @jerome The lawyers are probably working on it. I'm not surprised.

(Standard process, imo.)

@chris @michaelgemar @jerome it's going to take some time to even hand it over to a third party admin, if he can legally do that.

I think this is reasonable, given the circonstances.

@mayintoronto @michaelgemar @jerome it is. but whether lawyers/courts think so might be another thing if there is a chance of seizure.

@chris @mayintoronto @michaelgemar @jerome And none of that would be good for users, who will lose everything!

It’s easy to criticize, but sad to see that it was not a NFP/OSBL 😞
I remember them having plans to become a non-profit.

@EdwinG @chris @mayintoronto @michaelgemar @jerome

Chad often made the call for help in moving the service to a non-profit. Nobody with experience showed up.

@jfmezei If my memories are correct, he wanted to "incorporate" (probably wrong term) as a national not for profit, instead of a provincial one.

That's not as common as one might expect.

@chris @mayintoronto @michaelgemar @jerome

@EdwinG It doesn't matter where you incorporate. It's just slightly different rules around reporting. From a legal perspective, it doesn't make a difference.

Same for regular corporations.

@jerome Yeah, Im downloading my archive now in case things move quickly.

I might have to switch instances if it's seized, but hopefully that doesn't happen.

😑

@jerome Thanks for posting the update. I am a bit disapointed chad hasn't posted something to reduce fear that the service could go away without warning.

Something akin to "While I can't discuss the legal issues surrounding me, I want to assure you that the the mstdn.ca service should continue for a while". type of message.

Since he runs this personally (neither a corporation nor non-profit), there are fewer protections for the service.
