"The trouble with having an open mind is that people come along and put things in it. It’s like when someone puts a Dumpster at the side of the road because they’re moving house and want to get rid of all the junk they’ve accumulated over the years. The next thing they know, the whole neighborhood’s thrown their junk in, and the Dumpster’s full."

A 2010 Gallup poll of US adults found that they ranked climate change as the least worrying of eight environmental concerns. Also in 2010, a poll done by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune newspaper found that only about one-third of Texas adults knew that humans evolved from earlier species. The list of such poll results could go on indefinitely, but you can see the gloomy picture they paint.
About 38 percent of American adults think the whole Bible, including the Old Testament, was written after Jesus’s death; three-quarters think that the phrase “God helps those who help themselves” comes from the Bible (it doesn’t); 16 percent think the Book of Thomas is in the Bible (it’s in fact in the Apocrypha); and—my favorite!—12 percent think Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife.
