The problem with the age verification thing in systemd and other projects is that this creates a precedent where the US places a law or regulation and FOSS developers comply with the law. So if the US says we need to ID ourselves to use our operating system, there is not going to be an alternative anymore.
Up until now FOSS was a safe haven against corporate surveillance, but now that's no longer the case. And the problem is, there is no alternative. You could try running a Linux system from scratch but that's going to be a nightmare to maintain for a single person. Even with enough knowledge, there is just too much.
Other people will say "fork the projects and that's it" but the forks also need maintainers and sometimes it's just too much as well. The problem is that computer software has grown way too complex, and while a single person could create and maintain a piece of software in the past, nowadays you need a lot of people and a lot of time and everything. Its not impossible but also not that easy.
