My (Jewish) family too. My grandparents thought of the Canter's on Fairfax (opened in late 40s, about when they left Boyle Heights for Van Nuys) as the new location.

@AdrianRiskin Exactly! My family settled in that same neighborhood on 1st St. The original Canter's was on Brooklyn & (I think) Breed,not far from Soto. My mom and grandma told me about how things were. I lived there off and on from 1961-1964.
