Plex seems to be randomly & unpredictably falling back to software transcoding for the last day or two... I think it's an HDR thing? (And unfortunately, almost all of my stuff is HDR.)

#plex #selfhosting

Manually rolled Plex back to 1.43.0.10492-121068a07 via the .deb, and I'm able to enable HDR Tonemapping again without breaking 11th Gen Intel HW transcoding to SDR Google TV streamers.

So, it looks like v.1.43.1.10540-3972d551c breaks HDR Tonemapping. (I thought I was pulling that it from the Plex apt repo, but it was apparently from the TTeck autoupdate script. So I disabled that.)

@pax0707 I did that last week. I was using a Proxmox TTeck update script that was essentially ignoring it though, and it was apparently installing the newest beta .deb. I put a stop to that and reverted to stable.
@RxBrad I like those scripts for fast testing but never use them for “prod”.
@RxBrad GPU detected properly?
@pax0707 I think so? It randomly works, then stops working. Not sure if it was the updated ProxMox Kernel from updating a few days ago, or the latest Plex version. Or the new Plex repo?

@pax0707 @rusty1281 Fired up the same movie in Chrome and HW transcoding spins up just fine...

Maybe the Android client is jacked? The fails I've seen so far are from a Google Streamer & Chromecast.

@pax0707 @rusty1281 Disabling HDR Tonemapping in Plex appears to fix it. Not sure how terrible stuff will look on non-HDR TVs. Minecraft seems OK on my kitchen TV's Chromecast.

@RxBrad @rusty1281 could be android client issue.

I live in a orchard and never had those issues.

@RxBrad Can't say that I have had any similar issues on any of the plex servers. Currently running the latest beta on all of them.
@rusty1281 My suspicion is that updating the Proxmox kernel yesterday might've broken HDR tonemapping in my Plex LXC or something...

@rusty1281 @RxBrad same.

If it breaks it usually breaks for everything and it’s mostly related to updates breaking video drivers.

@pax0707 @rusty1281 It seems that the Plex beta release in question isn't playing nice with QuickSync.

Added my issue to the pile...

Hardware/GPU/Quicksync transcoding broken on Beta 1.43.1.10540

Server Version#: 1.43.1.10540 Player Version#: After updating to the last beta version, version 1.43.1.10540 , GPU (hardware) transcoding no longer worked for me. I am on unraid, running Hotio docker container running on a Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265K with build in IGPU with quicksync. When I rollback to the last stable version, everything works fine. I enabled debug and trace logs, and found this entry: [Req#5a3d58/Transcode/8da8b6f6-eb8d-4ef3-92e9-bf370e3e7e63] TPU: hardware transcoding: ena...
