[Mini Poll] Which of these games feels closest to the original Half-Life?

Poll results are in!

Here’s how the community voted:

  • Quake 4 -> 2 votes
  • Quake III Arena -> 1 vote
  • Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 –> 1 vote

I then ran the same three games through the Gamescovery similarity algorithm to see which one is closest to the original Half‑Life.

According to the algorithm, Quake 4 takes the top spot, followed by Quake III Arena, with AVP 2000 coming in last.

So this time, the algorithm lined up with the community’s pick - but there’s a catch. Several people pointed out that Quake II might actually be the closest match to Half‑Life. In the algorithm, however, Quake II ranks even further away than AVP 2000.

I’ll double‑check that. Thanks to everyone who voted and shared their thoughts!

None of them really compare.

Quake 2 stripped away the charm of Quake; Quake 3 was the harbinger of a new era of arena shooters and Quake 4 dealt the killing blow to the franchise, ending any resemblance whatsoever to the original. Of all of these, Quake 2 resembled Half Life the most, but still lacked the rich narrative.

AVP (2000) was phenomenal, and thus is probably the most appropriate to compare to Half-Life, though still a very different game.

Hi, about Quake 2 - do you mean it was the most similar to the original Half-Life because of style? Or rather because of the main “idea”, genre, and plot? Just interested in your opinion
Style, the increase in puzzle aspects, larger interconnected maps with backtracking. HL still blew them away in every category, though.
Quake 2 came before HL. HL used the quake engine and was also heavily influenced by the game itself.
In terms of engine, Quake 3. Both of their engines are built after the Q2 engine.
I’m gonna say AVP Classic cause it’s the only other one I’ve played.
AvP, it was more climatic and less frantic than Quake IIRC.
