RE: https://mstdn.ca/@announcements/116266821872646846

This is scheduled to be a long-overdue financial update on #mstdnca, with details on the recent switch to self-hosted servers, and other updates on management & moderation.

But given yesterday's news about our benevolent dictator getting sued, with accusations of embezzlement, by another non-profit where he was serving as treasurer, things might get off agenda.

Either way, probably worth making an effort to participate if you still have a @@mstdn.ca handle. Sunday Mar 22, 3pm Edmonton time.

Edit: The session has been postponed. "A new date and time will be provided soon" per the announcements on the server and in edits to the blog post linked above.
No reason given.

Given the seriousness of the accusations, my sarcastic wording was maybe not appropriate. To clarify:

"Benevolent dictator" is an established term in open source software to refer to a founder who maintains control of a widely-used project. I do not consider it an insult, just a description of the project management structure. But it is an acknowledgement of the fact that all accounts on this server are dependent on one person being able & willing to continue running it.

The fact that mstdn.ca is entirely dependent on one person is a problem for all members to deal with. No one is holding us hostage. We're happily taking advantage of Chad's time & resources. I don't know all the reasons why efforts to transition to a formal non-profit society failed, but one of them is that the vast majority of members, myself included, weren't willing to commit to doing the work.

@AmeliasBrain I just backed up my list of followed accounts and bookmarks.

@rueben You might also want to request & download your post archive.

While you can't yet upload an archive of old posts to a new Mastodon account, some other fediverse software do support that. And you might just want it as a personal backup or reference if the current server ever goes offline.
