Bought a new TV… Yay!
Feeling too poorly to set it up… Boo hoo hoo.

Going from a 15 year old LCD panel with backlighting issues to an OLED with 10” more real estate, I really wanted to watch an epic movie today.

@jitmangenie Hope you feel better soon! I bet anime is going to look amazing on an OLED.
@RobeeShepherd I have some 4k discs in combo sets that I still have to buy a player for. Don’t think I can afford a third double dip frenzy though.
@jitmangenie Even with a 4K projector, you very very rarely see a difference in quality tbh. So much is shot and edited digitally now in 2K. https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=Qy86CDl1Do4F97pa&v=yN0H_WfWOp4&feature=youtu.be

@RobeeShepherd Yeah, I saw that vid when you last recommended it. Interesting watch. At a rough count, I already have 10 UHD titles, either as combo releases or check discs. So at least I can go straight to a compare and contrast to see how much difference it makes on titles like The Great Escape, Demolition Man, Red Heat, The Abyss, and Perfect Blue for anime.
@jitmangenie True. I have The Abyss I should check. But there’s also the capsaholic website
@RobeeShepherd I couldn’t just leave boxes in the way, so I tried setting it up. Didn’t have time for the sound bar though. Fold out sheet with a pictogram set up guide, a 100 page booklet with words to that effect in 40 languages. But no manual. It’s online only. 168 pages if I want to print it out. I’m trial and erroring my way through, although I’m saying no to as much telemetry as I can.
@jitmangenie Ah telemetry, one of the two things you have to turn off on a modern TV… that and motion smoothing. 🤣

@RobeeShepherd This one’s especially insidious. It’s got something called Film Mode next to Motionflow, which ‘optimises picture quality and smoothly reproduces the motion of filmed images’

The ‘smoothly’ made me turn it off straight away.

@jitmangenie I hate to say it but my projector has a smooth motion setting called True Cinema thats very very subtle and I actually keep it on!
@RobeeShepherd Last piece of the puzzle today, the soundbar and sub. Would you believe it can’t be properly set without an app on my iPad? It’s only to set the listening distances. Upward firing speakers for Atmos and whatnot, but not quite as good as my old 5.1 home cinema, which in a Victorian back room w cubbies and soft furnishings was immersive at best. Did I mention I hate modern tech. Then I closed the curtains and watched the first fifteen minutes of Chronicles of Riddick. Face-hurt-grin
@jitmangenie Yes, yes I would believe that! 🤣 But it’s worth it for the grin isn’t it!
@RobeeShepherd The adventure continues. Supposedly a Master TV, expertly tuned to work out of the box, just turn it to Cinema mode and watch a movie. My first film on that TV, Diamonds Are Forever. And for two hours, I’m increasingly thinking this looks wrong. Turns out Cinema mode has a variety of Colour temperatures to choose from, and it defaults to Expert 1. Expert 1 and 2 apply varying degrees of Orange and Teal filter. Expertly tuned, my arse! Now I have to choose tween warm and neutral.
@jitmangenie I had a similar experience with my projector having all the blacks washed out on HDR content, still don’t know why one preset fixes it over the other but there we go!
@RobeeShepherd I got my UHD player today, and I’m sold on 4k. It’s not so much the resolution as it is the colours and highlights and shadows, the image is so much more dynamic. I got Bill and Ted free with the player and did a quick compare. The movie begins with this bronze Polygon thing floating down from a hole in the roof. It looks good on Blu, but in UHD, you can see the sun glaring through the roof, and the bronze thing sparkles and glints all the way down. Resolution barely differs tho.
@RobeeShepherd I also tried that Great Escape check disc, and there isn’t that much difference to the Blu, but you can see the sun glinting off the stormtrooper helmets, and those silver buttons are so shiny on those Nazi uniforms!
@jitmangenie It does seem to be the very occasional scene that stands out. I’m just mostly glad I don’t need to replace all my blurays with UHD ones because that would cost me a fortune! I’m definitely getting the original Star Wars trilogy when that comes out though.
@RobeeShepherd I’m placing an order for Blade Runner today, but I can’t think of any other movies I want to rebuy, not even The Matrix, and that’s supposed to be a good upgrade (it would mean buying the others.)
@jitmangenie Be interested in if that one is a big improvement! Although do I want to quadruple dip?
@RobeeShepherd It’s my sixth time. Twice on VHS, twice on DVD, and once on Blu-ray. Fave movie init?
@jitmangenie Worth it then!
