Hello fellow leftists,

We've recently had quite a lot of spambots on the instance.

For that reason, we've turned on approval mode for signups. This means that when people want to create a new account, they have to write a short message about why they want an account on radikal.social. The admin team then reads the requests and manually approves or rejects each one.

This should reduce the amount of spam drastically. However, it could also deter some people from joining, so we're currently planning on making it only temporary.

As a user on radikal.social, what are your thoughts on this ?

How have you experienced the spambots ?

Do you have any proposals other than manual approval ?

We look forward to hearing from you :)

@radikal saw the bots! have also seen posts by other instance admins and mastodon nerds warning of the spambot wave and telling people to do exactly what youve just done. think youre right that it will slow down signups. reckon it's probably preferable to letting spam drive up churn and putting us at risk of ending up in spam blocklists. cool that youre on top of it!!

@henry

Thanks for the reply :)

I don't get why people create nonsense spambots, but it is good to know that it's not just radikal.social that is under pressure :)
