HOW THE FUCK IS DEBIAN STILL SHIPPING GIMP 2
@midnaw their entire distro is built around giving people outdated and mouldy packages to give your computer food poisoning 😋
@Charlotte true... but mint so good...
@midnaw true honestly i'd still be using mint if it didnt have so many issues with outdated packages. like their bluetooth drivers had bugs in them that had been patched in the main bluez repo for almost 3 years lol
@Charlotte LOL as much as i love mint that tracks
@midnaw oh my god did 3.0 not make it past the package freeze? thats literally horrific i hate that lmao

tbf if you use debian for desktop activities, you can also just install the flatpak in fact you're encouraged to
@coolbean to be honest i fucking hate GIMP 3 anyways but still
@midnaw honestly most of the differences i noticed i actually preferred i was quite a happy camper when 3.0 hit openbsd
@coolbean it's a buggy mess lmao the layer filters are inconsistently functional and changing the size of a layer doesn't scale the filter as well so it applies to like the top left corner of your image and nothing else
@midnaw ill be honest i just use it for doodling so i liked the brush improvements with dynamics and smoothing
@coolbean that's totally fair i just use it for like pixel art and image processing at this point and it's kind of shittttt at that now
@midnaw i do tend toward pixel art but yea nothing complex so im not feeling it

for a while i used grafx2 so really nothing fazes me anymore. im hoping to someday find a program thats not a nightmare to do pixel art in but last i tried krita for it i crashed it by using the circle tool on too small a diameter
@midnaw ive been on and off thinking about trying azpainter
@coolbean this reminds me of like newtek aura
@coolbean LOL i love krita for art at proper normal people resolutions but nothing really beats aseprite for me for pixel art
@midnaw ion have money and neither it nor libresprite are available for openbsd
@coolbean i think aside from it using like skia for some reason it's not tooooo difficult to build?? but i've never done it on any of the BSDs so
@midnaw i expect it to give me trouble on openbsd in particular just cause its really fucking picky about memory access (same reason we dont get wine  )
@midnaw if a program is written correctly it should just work

if
@coolbean i'm writing a bad 2D game engine in SDL3 i'll try my best to write it correctly
@midnaw gosh thats a project idea ive wanted to do one too many times

atp ive put it off until im on adhd meds again because the moment i open sdl docs my eyes just kind of glaze over and i die instantly
@coolbean that's fair . sdl3's API is a lot nicer at least!!
@coolbean and also i keep starting this project and giving up so maybe i'm just doing that again
